Local Farm Sanctuaries

A Farm Sanctuary - a home where animals are brought to live and be protected for the rest of their lives. Unlike animal shelters, sanctuaries do not seek to place animals with individuals or groups, instead maintaining each animal until his or her natural death.

Wishing Well Sanctuary – in Bradford

An oasis of discovery and development, repose, and renewal, our Wishing Well Sanctuary is a center for personal growth, inner peace, healing, and joy.  We are also a farmed animal sanctuary and, therefore, we can say that we truly are a sanctuary of all!   This delightful retreat is just north of "Ontario's food basket" (the Holland Marsh) near Bradford, Ontario.  Just a mere 45 minutes from central Toronto

A peace pole was raised at the inaugural Wishing Well Sanctuary Open House, held in May 2012.  On it are inscribed the words May Peace Prevail On Earth in Braille, English, French, Ojibway, Sanskrit, Hebrew and paw prints.  We are all connected!

Wishing Well Sanctuary is a charitable organization; therefore, your donations will assist in feeding and caring for the animals at the Sanctuary and also assist in providing programs to youth and their families who otherwise could not afford to attend.

Happily Ever Esther Sanctuary– in Campbellville

Esther is some pig. She was misrepresented as a "micro pig" and sold to Steve and Derek in the Summer of 2012.  She was just 4 pounds, and in under 2 years she grew to be 500 pounds!  Derek and Steve kept Esther anyways.  She was accustomed to home life, and so the whole family went on an adventure of a lifetime.

We hope this page will make you take a minute to re-evaluate some of your consumption habits.  We always seem to prefer the "I'd rather not think about it" approach.  If you took just a few minutes to learn how brutal life is for these loving, intelligent and compassionate animals, I know it would change your mind and maybe even convince you to lead a cruelty-free and compassionate lifestyle.

And now the Pair (Derek and Steve are working hard to create a Farm Sanctuary for Esther and her new friends.

Land O’Lakes Rescues Petting Farm – in Cloyne

Land O'Lakes Rescue Petting Farm originated because there was a need to help injured, sick and abandoned farm animals and offer a therapeutic setting for children and adults who have suffered from trauma and have special needs. We have been foster parents for the past 11 years and we have seen first-hand how children and adults have overcome their trauma by working with these animals.

Ralphy’s Retreat Sanctuary for Pot Belly Pigs

Ralphy's Retreat started off as part of Bella Misty Meadows Animal Sanctuary. Founded in 2004, the Sanctuary has helped many animals in need find wonderful homes and offered sanctuary to countless others.  We accepted our first pot-belly pigs in April 2010 and so our journey into the wonderful world of Porcine began.  Ralphy's Retreat has now taken the reins from Bella Misty Meadows and is a stand alone organization.

The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada – in Guelph

Since 1992, The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada has been a refuge for donkeys, mules and hinnies who have been neglected or abused, or who can no longer be cared for by their owners. The Sanctuary rescues the donkey with hooves so long it lives in constant pain and cannot walk. It saves a terrified mule shivering in a pen in a slaughterhouse. It offers a home to a much-loved donkey whose aging owners can no longer provide adequate care. At the Sanctuary, the animals are provided a welcome and often life-saving peaceful haven after years of suffering and neglect.
